9:25 pm - A Mixed Bag Regarding US Politics
|
Obama won! :D I'm happy.
Hopefully he will shape the future of the United States for the better.
Say what you like, but you have to admit that the man has inspired a lot of people. The electon was the 1st time I had more than a fleeting interest in politics, and I'm Canadian.
On the other hand, this makes me feel sick. Prop 8 has banned gay marriage in California after it was made legal. This is not only a gay rights issue, but a human rights one as well. Imagine if straight marriages were banned and heterosexual folks discriminated against. Doesn't feel so good, does it? This isn't a religious issue at all, but basic human decency.
What is it really going to do? Magically turn people straight? It doesn't work that way. Voting yes on Prop 8 makes folks around you miserable for various reasons. I don't think that's what anybody wants. The supposed "sanctity" of marriage has already been ravaged my millions of people who didn't truly appreciate its worth.
It's incredibly sad when people have to move to a different place simply because they fell in love with the "wrong" gender. No, that's not the correct statement to make. One loves a person for who they are, and not their gender. Simply put, love is love.
I'd like to see somebody try to argue against that. *gets off of soapbox*

1:05 pm - Cabaret- Short Review
|
So, I saw the evening performance of Cabaret at the Stratford Festival yesterday. (It was a full cast, by the way.)
A few quick observations:
Well, it's not perfect but I tried. The main reason that I had trouble writing this was because I was mostly unfamiliar with the material beforehand. Thus, I wasn't sure what to comment on. I wanted to be surprised. I was, and enjoyed the production immensly. Although, there were a couple of things I didn't understand. I hope I don't feel obliged to review the Shakespeare I see today.......

12:13 pm - And I'm spent.......
|
|
Well, I've finally finished reading Twilight. It was.....interesting. Some elaborations: There was also an excerpt of New Moon, but it speaks for itself, and I'm too tired to dissect any more bad writing any further. I'm going to the Shakespeare Stratford Festival soon, anyway. :D

2:16 pm - Finally...Sweeney Todd: The Movie
|
|
I ended up seeing it by myself as the friend I saw the tour with was busy, and another friend I wanted to bring with me couldn't go. Nobody cared that I was under 18, but that was probably because very few people there were seeing the movie to begin with. I asked my Dad if we could buy the DVD and his answer was yes. YAY! Not to mention that by his estimation it should be released rather soon, given that most people don't want to see it in theatres. That is unfortunate, but with luck I could end up getting it as a birthday present.
I'll probably end up seeing it at least another time on the big screen, since the friends I mentioned haven't seen it yet. I'm up for it, so it's all good.

I really should get in the habit of reviewing shows again. Gah, my thoughts are in such random order.
(Note: the comments with the asterisks in front of them I also added when I edited this. It just looks nicer than putting "Edit" in front of every aditional observation.)

7:19 pm - Musical Tastes Survey
|
Take a look at this:http://www.musicaltastetest.com/
Apparently someone is doing a survey on how people's musical preference predicts what kind of lives they lead, as shown here.
I took it, and it's rather long. It's amazing how many different types of music there is.

3:30 pm - Sondheim Quotes
|
"My idea of heaven is not writing."
"Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos."
“One difference between poetry and lyrics is that lyrics sort of fade into the background. They fade on the page and live on the stage when set to music.”
“I was raised to be charming, not sincere.”
"Hit songs did not come out of musicals. Pop-rock was creating the hits. There were very few songs that made the charts out of any Broadway musical."
"I firmly believe lyrics have to breathe and give the audience's ear a chance to understand what's going on. Particularly in the theater, where you have costume, story, acting, orchestra."
"I started listening to classical music when I was in my early teens. Prior to that, I listened to pop records or band records."
"If people have split views about your work, I think it's flattering. I'd rather have them feel something about it than dismiss it."
"Musicals are, by nature, theatrical, meaning poetic, meaning having to move the audience's imagination and create a suspension of disbelief, by which I mean there's no fourth wall. "
"One of the hardest things about writing lyrics is to make the lyrics sit on the music in such a way that you're not aware there was a writer there. "
"Oscar's creative imagination was far more sophisticated than the work itself, and has affected the theater permanently."- On Oscar Hammerstein
"The dumbing down of the country reflects itself on Broadway. The shows get dumber, and the public gets used to them."
"The movie adaptations of stage musicals that I've seen, without exception, in my opinion don't work. A lot of people would disagree with me. "
"The worst thing you can do is censor yourself as the pencil hits the paper. You must not edit until you get it all on paper. If you can put everything down, stream-of-consciousness, you'll do yourself a service."
"What justifies a character singing one idea for 3 minutes on the screen? I get impatient and want the story to carry on. I don't get impatient in the theatre."
Random, I know. But it's good stuff.

10:55 am - Phantomy Links
|
Take a look at this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqKuKqmcMIk It's Michael Crawford singing Music of The Night. I love his voice, and now I have a video to go with the song. Although to be honest, I don't really like the video that much.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nsdObpEC9U Another MOTN, only Gary Mauer this time. I don't really like his voice, but there were some good bits. His "soar" was good, and so was the end, with that long, drawn-out note. But then, those are my two favorite parts in that version of MOTN.
http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=MasqueDeNuit This page shows all the videos by the person who posted the Gary Maur MOTN. I don't have time to watch any more phantomy videos there, because of real life, but I'll get back to it later.
